About Us

This blog was born in late 2007 as we prepared our move from Antwerp to Sydney. Like a true baby it has gone through many different transformations to become what it is today -i.e. we leave the embarrassing early posts up as they might be useful to others migrating Down Under! We post the latest news about our lives, travels, the quirks of living in Australia and being a stranger in your own country (aren’t we all?).
If you like it, talk to us. We looooooooove reading your comments! It makes us incredibly giddy. We are crazy like that.

I am an electrophysiologist. This is a fancy word for somebody who studies the brain and the electric currents running inside. My research is focused on mapping the auditory system. I help develop algorithms and devices to improve the detection and remediation of hearing problems. The best part of my job is working with little kids – and help their parents understand what can be done.

At first I thought Ilse was a tomboy who wouldn’t shut up. But as we became friends I realized she was a very special girl. A year and several cups of milk later, I was positively convinced she was out of my league. That all changed with a little help from her mother and a summerstorm. Ilse is not only my best friend, but also my little lucky charm.

I am a bookmonger (Kindle!) who likes science fiction, stars, swimming in the sea at night, Tim Tam slams, doing the chicken dance, boardgames and all animals, especially fluffy ones. As a kid I wanted to be an astronaut.

Random fact: I can curl my tongue.

I am a photographer with a disproportionate amount of wanderlust. I love to study human nature and get lost in thought. As I have always felt a bit of an outsider, the best part of my job is to be able to look inside through the viewfinder. And I get to meet awesome people.

At first I thought Bram looked like Elvis – the older version, not the younger one. But gradually I got to see his sensitive side and completely fell for this non-judgmental boy with the bluest eyes you’ve ever seen. He is not only my best friend, he is a rock you can lean on, he is what keeps me balanced.

I like dreaming and making sure others do too, playing the piano, candlelight, tickling Bram and beating him at boardgames, reading and telling stories, music, dancing, maths, rooftops, being impatient and summer thunderstorms. As a kid I wanted to be a nun.

Random fact: I have a masters degree in computer science. Yes that is as geeky as it sounds.
