Things we’ve done instead of blogging…

  1. Bought a new old car, very similar to its Belgian cousin, but with a color worthy of its neighbourhood (Bram can tell you more about that one 🙂 ). I haven’t named it yet… ideas always welcome of course!
  2. Looking around for furniture (see the previous blogpost)
  3. Buying fridges off the street (from an older gay couple that loves Belgian trappist beer :-))
  4. Laundry
  5. Working, and loving it 🙂
  6. Dining out, loving that too 😉
  7. Admiring local fauna & flora
  8. Shopping (all kinds of fruits! no paprika chips!)
  9. Listening to Edith Piaf on our roof terrace – with our chestnut tree rustling in the background.
  10. Writing this blog post from that same terrace using the Mac and the Telstra NextG card (tweaking the beta driver).

Btw, the house does come with a history… The story goes this is where the script of a famous Australian movie was written! Up to you to guess which one, I might give a hint or two if you ask nicely 🙂
More updates next week! It’s Bram’s last weekend here, so we’ll have to go outside, enjoy the sun and Australia Day!!!

Everything’s Darling in Sydney

Ziezo, de eerste werkdag hier is achter de rug 🙂
Na een vrij onrustige nacht (om maar niet te zeggen dat ik geen oog heb toegedaan), kwam ik toch ietwat minder fris op het nieuwe kantoor aan… De aussies vonden het precies allemaal wel amusant 😉

Nadat ik mijn nieuwe speelgoedjes had gekregen (laptop en funky gsm), werd ik al meteen de dichtsbijzijnde vergaderzaal binnengesleurd. Ze zeggen dan wel dat Oz zo laid-back is, maar ze weten toch waar de klepel hangt (en iets met de klok, ik vrees dat mijn Nederlands al aan het achteruitgaan is). Maar het bevalt me wel: ze werken hier strikt tussen 9 en 5, maar dan wordt er ook goed doorgewerkt. En dan blijft er s’avonds nog wat tijd over om een terrasje te doen (goede camera op die gsm trouwens):

Bram en ik zijn er nog naar een huisje gaan kijken, schitterende locatie en tiptop in orde. Wederom een applicatie ingediend en nu fingers x-ed! We hebben vandaag al bericht gekregen dat we niet geselecteerd zijn voor het huisje nabij Darling Street in Balmain. Maar gelukkig hebben we wel gehoord van Brian, onze favoriete frivole makelaar uit Surry Hills, dat we bij hem in de bovenste schuif liggen. Dit is voor een huisje in Ann Street, ook vlakbij Darlinghurst en Oxford Street.

Om trouwens te bewijzen dat de Aussies wel een leuk gevoel voor humor hebben, hier snel een foto vanop diezelfde Oxford Street:

En nu is het alweer bedtijd, heb nog wel wat slaap in te halen!

home sweet home

Having our first real house-hunting trips behind us, now might be a good time to quickly list a couple of things that could help those out there looking for a place to settle in Sydney.

If you have never visited Sydney before, a good place to start might be cityhobo. It gives a good – and in my experience trustworthy – description about life & style in the different suburbs and it even compares them to types of shoes for those fashionistas among you 😉 Btw, Sydney has around 60 different suburbs in total (!), which can be quite confusing at first, but use those maps regularly and you will get used to it.

Through that site and my own wandering around we’ve restricted our search to the following neighborhoods: Balmain, Glebe, Newtown, Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Woolloomoolloo, Potts Point, Mosman, Cremorne and Kirribilli. Places with each their own character, not too far from our work (either via car or public transport), but not too isolated either… Continue reading home sweet home
